Met Gala: The Clean Lines of a Cheongsam

The annual Met Gala has quickly become one of the most exciting nights of fashion on the red carpet. Whereas the Oscars tend to bring out stars in their most carefully styled and edited finery (yawn), the Met Gala brings out the risk takers, the fashion lovers, the fashion victims, and all those in between. Who will wear the most unwieldy, Cinderella-esque ball gown? Who will wear something silly on their head? Who will be the most naked? I'm looking at you Beyonce!

This year's theme is "China: Through the Looking Glass." These yearly themes give our fashionistas added inspiration and also additional ways to go astray (remember the 2013 punk theme). Most attendees of last night's gala were able to avoid "The World of Suzie Wong" look and found inspiration in the classic shape of the cheongsam, asian florals, and the traditional, if played-out themes of dragons, butterflies, and koi. Needless to say there was a lot of Chinese Red.

Here are a few of my favorite dresses that reference, but do not mimic the clean lines of a cheongsam.
 Lily Aldridge in Carolina Herrera

 Kendall Jenner in Calvin Klein

Kate Hudson in Michael Kors with Michael Kors
